The High Priest (大祭司, Dai saishi?) is a minor character in The Promised Neverland. He is a Demon who works as a priest and was a mentor to Sonju as a child and taught him the ways of the old faith.

Appearance[]

In the present day, he wears a long white robe with a red hood and baggy sleeves as well as a white collar. He has long white hair tied into a ponytail and a long white beard. Unlike most demons, he does not wear a mask. However, sometimes he can be seen wearing a fabric cloth with two vertically placed eye holes wrapped around his upper face.

Personality[]

The High Priest appears to be a kind old man who cares deeply for the well being of civilians.

History[]

Long ago, those who could convey the Demon God's voice oversaw the Temple. They appointed the king of every generation and helped to govern the citizens. However, due to Mujika's father and the nobility, their faith was distorted, and the Temples lost their power. Even so, some citizens pay their respects to the Temple, especially The High Priest and The Four Sages. But after the "promise" was forged, The High Priest allowed the people to violate the doctrine. It was so they could protect their lives. But to alone for that, The High Priest observed the faith on his own. It is because of him that people can eat cultivated human meat. The High Priest and his followers quelled the anger of the Demon God.[1][2]

The High Priest took Sonju in as a young child and taught the ways of the old faith which believed all life, including the lives of humans, was sacred and created by the Gods. At some point, the Demon King had reached an agreement with Julius Ratri which came to be known as The Promise. As a result, the old faith that Sonju's master preached and practiced was deemed rebellious and the priest was arrested and executed despite Sonju's pleas for mercy. Though his master was dragged away to his death, he encouraged the prince not to despair and to follow his king as it was his duty.[3]

Plot[]

Return to Grace Field Arc[]

After Norman's massacre of all the demon Royals and Nobles, the Royal Capital quickly fell into chaos with no leader. Sonju then reveals to Mujika that The High Priest as well as The Four Sages are, in fact still alive and that they had been able to survive for over 1,000 years without eating human meat without degenerating because they had placed themselves in some form of suspended animation which completely stopped their bodies cellular division and metabolic processes. Sonju then reveals that he plans to revive The High Priest and The Four Sages using the "Evil Blood" and make him the king believing he was the only one who could calm the chaos, bring people back together and guide them to a better future.[1][2]
