This article is about the Manga version of the Temple. For alternate pages referred to by this name, please click any of the icons above. The Temple is an old abandoned religious place of worship for Demons. Located in Demon World and just outside of the Demon Village, The Temple is an important location in the Cuvitidala Arc as it contains artwork of Day and Night which helps Emma and the other children find the Seven Walls.
Appearance[]
The Temple is perched on top on a barren mountain just outside of the Demon Village. The mountain is made of stone, clay and very rugged rock and has bad footing. It has 100 steps carved into the mountain leading up to the Temple. There are also lots of Demon birds living on the mountain. The birds have hands and feet and somewhat resemble Palvus, but with wings and beaks.[1]
The Temple is a sanctuary which consists of six small towers, each with a barred door. Each of the towers also have altars and relics of demons.
- The first one has a demon statue holding a faceless human bridal style while Vida surrounds it's feet.
- The second has a painting of the same "eye," in Emma's necklace, around it are food offerings and a single Vida.
- The third has a parchment of what demons will evolve into if they eat a certain organism.
- The fourth has a small altar, and in the middle is the same "eye."
- The fifth has a rectangular box with demonic writing in paper wrapped around it.
- And the sixth has a demon with a body of a human sitting around food offerings. On top of it is a hanging "eye."
Emma said that the demon sitting looks like , though it doesn't have the same features as the , she said it gave off the same feeling.
Ray found a painting of "Day and the Night" on the ceiling of the sixth. The others then went back and looked at the ceiling of the other towers. One has a painting of the "Golden Waters." And if they picture all the six paintings together, and they will find how to get in.
History[]
The demon faith from 1000 years ago has since been abolished, and now it is called the "primitive faith" and many of the sacred Temples for it have long since been abandoned, which is why it is now called the "primitive faith". In the 1000 years since then, the faith began to evolve and became recognized differently among the Royals, Aristocrats, and the civilians (such as adopting the belief that 'it's not okay to eat farmed humans'), but some remnants of the old faith still remain and some parts of it are still practiced such as the Gupna ritual. This is also why the many Temples all look similar, because they originally came from the "primitive faith".[2] The Temple where the great priests were enshrined was for the "primitive faith".
Demon cultural/religious significance[]
Plot[]
Cuvitidala Arc[]
While at Cuvitidala, Emma had a vision of Him telling her that she must come to Day and Night through the "proper entrance". The children theorize that this means the Temple and the golden water are needed to access the "proper entrance".[3]
Seven Walls Arc[]
Anime and Manga Differences[]
The Temple serves a completely different purpose in the manga than it does in the anime. In the manga, Emma has a vision of The Temple while at Cuvitidala and has to find it in order to access the Seven Walls and Day and Night.
In the anime, The Temple serves as the new hideout for the Grace Field Escapees after the Shelter was destroyed. However, the religious significance of The Temple, Day and Night and the Seven Walls are never mentioned. However, the painting of Day and Night is present on the ceiling just like in the manga, proving that it is the same Temple. The Temple in the anime is also more run down than it was in the manga with all of the towers, except for the main middle one, having collapsed.
