The Premium Farms, also referred to as "Orphanages" and "Top-Grade Farms", are farms that are made solely for producing the premium or high-end grade of human meat. The children at the Premium Farms are all very valuable,[1] in contrast to the Factory Farms, which are for the mass production of cheap meat. There are currently only four Premium Farms in operation, including the Grace Field House, while there are hundreds of Factory Farms.[2] The Premium Farms are hidden deep within forests and far away from demon societies, in order to prevent demon civilians from finding them and trying to steal the orphans.

History[]

1,000 years ago, the world was plagued by a war between humans and demons. In an attempt to end the war, a proposal —otherwise known as The Promise— was formed by the first head of the Ratri family and DemonKing Name. It declared that "Human beings shan't hunt 'demons' anymore. In return, 'demons' shan't hunt humans." Afterwards, the world was broken into two — one side belonging to the demons while the other belonging to the humans. As per the agreement, as small number of humans were left behind in the Demon World to satisfy the demons need to eat humans. These humans, who came to be referred to as "orphans" or "cattle children", were later kept in plantations under the guise of "orphanages" known as Premium Farms or Factory Farms to be raised as livestock for the demons to consume.

Located in the Demon World, the Premium Farms were built due the "Promise" made between the Demons and the Ratri family 1,000 years ago. It is unknown exactly when the Premium Farms were built or in what order, but it is implied that they have existed for hundreds of years, if not the full 1,000 years since the "Promise" was enacted. The current four Premium Farms did not exist 1,000 years ago. There were previous versions of top-grade farms, but it required around 400 years to come to the current form.[3] While there are hundreds of Factory Farms, which are for mass production of cheap meat for demon civilians, there are currently only four Premium Farms which produce high quality meat for wealthy and high ranking demons. The orphans in the Factory Farms are kept in poor conditions and are barely alive, while the orphans in the Premium Farms are raised in a good and safe environment so they can grow up healthily, develop smart brains, and make good meals for the demons. Since the livestock that comes from the Premium Farms are supposed to be the highest quality, any children born on these farms with disabilities, birth defects, deformities or other imperfections (such as Ayshe) are to be disposed of shortly after birth. Grace Field is regarded as the top Premium Farm with the hardest tests. Grace Field is also the smallest Premium Farm, being made up of a single building on each plantation. The other Premium Farms are made up of several buildings and have the appearance of villages. There is also a pathway to the Human World inside each of the Premium Farms for bringing food, toys, clothes, and others supplies to the farms.

While six is always the youngest minimum age to be shipped out, each Premium Farm has a different maximum shipment age. For Grace Field, the maximum shipment age is twelve, for Glory Bell it is fifteen, and for Grand Valley it is seventeen. This is because each Premium Farm focuses on different developments in their livestock.[4] Grace Field focuses solely on mental development and thus six years old is the minimum age to be shipped out of Grace Field because the human brain is said to be 90% developed by age six, and according to the manga, by age twelve it is completely developed.[5] Whereas Glory Bell and Grand Valley focus on mental and physical development thus qualifying for a higher maximum shipment age to make their bodies more physically developed.[4]

The children at the Premium Farms are all valuable,[6] in contrast to the children at the Factory Farms. The meat sold from the Premium Farms are of high quality and are sold at hefty prices to wealthy Demons, or are saved for, the demon king, to consume.

In November 2047, the Premium Farms were abolished after the enactment of Emma's Promise, which declared all farms be shut down and all of the surviving orphans be sent to live in the Human World.

Life at the farm[]

  • With the exception of Grace Field, all of the Premium Farms are located inside giant domes to prevent children from escaping.[10] Since Grace Field has the smartest children of all the Premium Farms, different measures were taken to prevent escape. Shortly after birth, children at Grace Field receive Transmitters inside their ears so that the Mama of their respective farms can use her Radar to locate their current location.[11] This, combined with the concrete wall and cliff that surrounds Grace Field was believed to be an effective way to prevent children from escaping.[3]
  • The children are required to take daily tests. This is a substitute for a real school and prepares the children for life outside of the orphanage. It is later revealed that the tests are necessary to make the children's brains delicious for the demons to consume.[12]
  • The plantations at the Premium Farms are designed to make the children's brains develop as much as possible by providing the them with everything they need to be happy and comfortable with minimal stress. The children are served gourmet food, sleep in plush beds, and are even permitted to celebrate their birthdays and holidays such as Christmas.[13]
  • All the uniforms are white.[14]
  • The children at Grace Field have an identification number on the left side of their neck, but not all farms do. In Grand Valley, the children have a code with numbers and letters on their upper chest and in Glory bell the ID numbers are on the left side of the abdomen.

Shipments[]

Everyday, the orphans are required to take tests under the guise of "schooling". When in fact, these tests are designed to determine their quality as livestock. Age determines the rank of their quality. Age five or younger is considered "low-quality", age six to seven is considered "average-quality", age eight to nine is considered "good-quality", age ten to eleven is considered "high-quality", and age twelve or older is considered "premium-quality".[15] While six is always the youngest minimum age to be shipped out, each Premium Farm has a different maximum shipment age. For Grace Field, the maximum shipment age is twelve, for Glory Bell it is fifteen, and for Grand Valley it is seventeen. This is because each Premium Farm focuses on different developments in their livestock.[16] Grace Field focuses solely on mental development and thus six years old is the minimum age to be shipped out of Grace Field because the human brain is said to be 90% developed by age six, and according to the manga, by age twelve it is completely developed.[17] Whereas Glory Bell and Grand Valley focus on mental and physical development thus qualifying for a higher maximum shipment age to make their bodies more physically developed.[16]

After the children reach the age of six, whichever child has the lowest score will be shipped out of each plant roughly once every two months. This allows the most intelligent children who show the most potential to continue to developed to increase their quality, while weeding out the weaker, less intelligent children who are not showing much potential. Those who have full scores will be shipped out no matter what once they reach the maximum shipment age of their respective farm. At Grace Field, the highest score a child can receive on a test is 300.[18] If a child scores lower than 120, their shipment date will be hastened.

IQ Test & Scores[]

Everyday, the orphans are required to take tests under the guise of "schooling" which will make them more academically mentally inclined. When in fact, these tests are designed to determine their quality as livestock. These tests are given daily in order to polish the brains of the children. The shipping order of all the children is based on how high they score on the IQ test, with the lowest scoring child at each plantation being shipped out roughly once every two months.[19]

Trivia[]

  • Only Grace Field is shown in the anime, but other Premium Farms are implied to exist due to Cislo, Barbara, and Vincent's presence.
  • Grace Field is the smallest Premium Farm and also the only Premium Farm to contain just a single building on each plantation. The other Premium Farms appear to have several buildings on each plantation, giving them the appearance of small villages or towns.
  • When asked what the annual income of demons working on a farm in real-world money would be, Kaiu Shirai said the Grace Field Boss Demon's would be tens of millions of yen level in modern Japan. He also said that the demons income depends on the farm they work for, with the highest grade farms paying the most and the Factory Farms paying the least. However, Factory Farm jobs still have a higher salary and authority than a general job.[3]
  • Grace Field is the only Premium Farm that has the word "House" after it. Most likely because the plantations at Grace Field only contain a single house whereas the other Premium Farms have several buildings on each of their plantations.
  • The reason why there are so few Premium Farms compared to the massive amount of Factory Farms is most likely because only the few wealthy and high ranking demons can afford to purchase meat from the Premium Farms so they do not need many of them whereas the Factory Farms are meant to feed everyone else so they need a lot of them.
  • The reason all of the Premium Farm names start with the letter G is because Shirai wanted the farms to have easy to remember names. That way readers can just hear the name and know if it starts with a G it must be a farm.[3]
  • The names of the human supervisors are different for each farm (ie. "Mama", "Teacher"), because the camouflage of the farm is separate for each. Grace Field is "a happy orphanage playing family inside the House", Glory Bell is "like a town", Grand Valley and Goodwill Ridge are "school-like facilities".[3]
    • Sugita proposed that Yugo should be from a farm that focuses both on physical and mental development. Shirai wanted Yugo's farm's shipping age to be around 15 years, so he thought of different names for the human supervisors.[3]
