The Massacre of the Demons, also called the Royal Capital Battle or the Imperial Capital Battle, was a plan by Norman to annihilate Queen Legravalima and the Five Regent Families as well as all of the demon civilians in the Royal Capital. The Massacre took place on November 10, 2047, during the annual Tifari celebration and it is a major event in the Imperial Capital Battle Arc.
Prelude[]
The demon species has evolved to take on the appearance and intelligence of whatever creature they consume. They want to be as smart as possible so they choose to eat human meat to be as smart as humans. However, they must eat it often or risk degenerating back into a mindless wild demon.
Norman knew this and as soon as he escaped from Lambda 7214 he began planning to drive the demon species to extinction by eradicating the farm system. He planned to do this by destroying as many of the farms as he could knowing that the demons could not survive without them. After reuniting with Emma, Ray and the other Grace Field Escapees, Norman told them about his plan and that instead of tying to escape to the Human World they should instead shift their focus to eradicating the demons and the Ratri Clan, destroying "the Neverland" and turning it into a paradise for humans.[1][2] Most of the children rejoice at Norman's plan, however, after learning the history of the demons, Emma decides that she does not want to kill them because they sentient beings with their own lives, thoughts, hopes, friends and families. And while the demons eat humans, which Emma hates, they are only eating to survive just like humans do. Emma becomes desperate to find another option and remembers how Mujika and Sonju do not eat humans which would ruin Norman's plan if there are others like them.[3]
Meanwhile, Norman (disguised as "William Minerva") meets with Lord Geelan in hopes of forming an alliance to destroy the Demon World which is the next part of his plan. 700 years ago Geelan was a noble who advised the royal family and nobility. However, the royal family and the other Five Regent Houses then betrayed and framed him for treason, and consequently purged Geelan and his clan. Ever since then Geelan has been seeking revenge. Per their alliance, "Minerva" offers Geelan his revenge by exterminating the Royal Family and the Five Regent Families which will allow Geelan to reclaim his post and "Minerva" will also make him the king. In return, "Minerva" wants Geelan free all of the current "cattle children" and allow them to self-govern. However, "Minerva" says he does not intend to take away their food source. Instead asking Geelan to simply release all of the current "cattle children", but letting the demons keep the farm facilities to raise new humans. "Minerva" also says Geelan can do whatever he want with the Ratri Clan whether that be eat them or cultivate them to breed new humans. Additionally, "Minerva" points out how the Ratri Clan's technology is advanced enough that they can create hundreds of new humans from a single strand of human hair and he offers to hand over all of the research data from Lambda to help them with that. Geelan agrees and they both sign a contract.[4][5]
Afterwards, Norman reveals to Zazie that the entire alliance was a lie and that Geelan and his clan are just pawns in his larger plan to exterminate the demons. Norman instead plans to cause a civil war in the Demon World by killing the royal family and Five Regent Families which will lead demon society to fall into chaos and eventually cause demons to destroy each other. However, Norman knew that humans would not have a chance at assassinating the royal family and nobility which is why he recruited Geelan to do it. Plus, by not sending humans to fight they will not have to worry about losing any of their own. Norman also knows that Geelan was lying too and has no intention of keeping his end of the deal either. Geelan also begins to suspect that "Minerva" was an imposter as the real William Minerva should have died years ago and plans to eat him immediately after completing his revenge.[6][7]
After Norman tells Emma and Ray about this part of his plan, Emma and Norman decide to tell him that there are some demons such as Mujika who do not need to eat human to avoid degenerating and how if there are more demons like that, his plan will not work. Norman is shocked as he reveals that he has heard of these kind of demons, but thought they were all dead. Norman then proceeds to tell Emma and Ray the story of the "Evil-blooded girl" and how over time demons had started evolve and some demons started to be born with a mutation in their blood that no longer made them dependent on human meat to maintain their current form. The wealthy and high ranking demons as well as the Ratri Clan saw this as a threat to their power and society since they would not be able to control these individuals by feeding them low quality meat to keep their intelligence low. As a result, the Queen declared this mutation an "Evil Blood" and used fear-mongering to scare unknowing demons civilians into not wanting to drink the blood, saying it was "evil" and will kill them. Additionally, the Queen ordered that any demons who possess this so-called "Evil Blood" must be captured and executed immediately. The Royal Family and the Five Regent Families would also eat the demons who possessed the "Evil Blood" after executing them, giving them the "Evil Blood" as well. However, they keep this a secret from the civilians. Despite possessing the "Evil Blood" themselves, the Royal Family and the Five Regent Families still choose to eat humans because they enjoy the taste and to keep up appearances around other demons who are unaware that they possess it.[8]
When Mujika was born with this blood, she was hailed by her village as a "miracle child" for her immunity to degeneration. It is implied that there were other Demons born with this blood, but they have since been exterminated and now Mujika is the only one left. At some point, Mujika's village was destroyed by servants of the Royal family seeking to execute anyone who possess the so-called "Evil Blood". Her family was killed in the battle and Mujika herself was captured and held in the dungeon at the Royal Capital awaiting execution where she met and befriended Sonju. Sonju helped Mujika escape from the dungeon and ran away with her, becoming a "Heathen" himself.[9]
Emma tries to persuade Norman that they could instead use the "Evil Blood" to make all demons immune to degeneration so that they do not have to eat humans, but Norman remains firm in his own plan. Instead Norman declares that Sonju and Mujika are a threat to his plan and they must be killed. Emma tries to convince Norman that Sonju and Mujika are good and and should not be annihilated, but Norman does not listen, saying that if they choose to spare Sonju and Mujika they will eventually turn against them for killing the rest of their kind. On top of that, if they simply used the "Evil Blood" to make all demons immune to degeneration so that they do not have to eat humans, they would still want to eat humans anyway since they enjoy it.[8] Emma attempts to tell Norman about her and Ray's previous plan of going to the Seven Walls, creating a new Promise and going to the Human World, but Norman is doubtful that the Seven Walls even exists, equating it to folklore. Emma reminds Norman that Julius Ratri was able to go there to make the Promise and tells him that they have already figured out how to find it. Emma then asks Norman that if her and Ray go to the Sevens Walls and figure out more about it, will he reconsider his annihilation plan. Norman says he will not stop or delay his plan, but if they return before he executes his plan, he will think about it.[10] However, Norman later reveals to Barbara, Cislo, Zazie and Vincent that he does not intend to change his plan regardless.[11]
Meanwhile, after being informed of the recent attacks carried out on the farms, the Queen orders the royal demon army to go catch and kill the aggressors incorrectly believing she knows where they are hiding. Getting the royal demon army away from the palace was also apart of Norman's plan as without them it will be much eaiser to kill the royal family and Five Regent Families. Norman then decides he will execute his massacre in eight days on the day on the annual Tifari celebration.[12] While Emma and Ray are away at the Seven Walls, Norman asks Don and Gilda to find Sonju and Mujika to protect them from being caught and killed by the royal family and the Ratri Clan. However, Don and Gilda recognize that Norman is just trying to get them to lure him to Sonju and Mujika so he can kill them, but they pretend to cooperate to find them so they can protect Sonju and Mujika from Norman.[13]

Anime and Manga Differences[]
The are many differences between the Massacre of the Demons in the manga and anime series. In the anime, Norman simply unleashes a poisonous gas onto a Demon Village as revenge for what demons did to him at Lambda. However, in the manga, Norman plans to cause a civil war within the Demon World by wiping out the Queen, the Five Regent Houses and all of the civilians in the Imperial Capital and eventually drive the demon species to extinction by destroying all of the farms. Many key components of the Massacre of the Demons in the manga including the Queen, the Five Regent Houses, Lord Geelan, the Tifari, the Seven Walls, the Imperial Capital and the social and political aspects of demon society and the hierarchy of demons are completely absent from the anime. Also in the anime, Norman stops his massacre when he hears the blind demon, Vylk, call out for his granddaughter who is coincidentally also named Emma, which does not happen in the manga considering Vylk and Emma (Demon) are anime original characters.
