Barbara (バーバラ, Bābara?) is a character of The Promised Neverland series. She is a sixteen-year-old orphan from Goodwill Ridge orphanage. She was shipped out to Lambda 7214 to experimented on. She is an ally and underling of Norman's.

History[]

Young Barbara and Cislo

Barbara and Cislo's childhood.

Barbara was born on June 18, 2031 and raised at Goodwill Ridge orphanage, growing up along with several other children. At some point, she and her close friend, Cislo were shipped out and sent to an experimental farm called Lambda 7214, a place for experimenting on children. Being tested on with numerous experimental procedures, such as drugging, eventually led Barbara to develop superhuman strength,[3] though her psyche was damaged heavily.

After being held in Lambda 7214 for around four years, Norman, under the alias of William Minerva, rescued Barbara and the other victims who were experimented on in the facility and burned it to the ground. Finally freed from the torturous and hellish plantation, Barbara was eternally grateful for Norman's help and has now been addressing him as "Boss" as she serves as his underling in the Paradise Hideout, a place which she now resides in. She harbors a deep hatred towards demons for the pain and suffering they put her through and she eats the meat of demons as a form of revenge.

Appearance[]

Barbara full appearance

Barbara's full appearance.

Barbara is a girl of medium height with light skin and yellow eyes. She has long brown hair tied into a ponytail which features multiple pink streaks and a very long pink lock that wraps around her ponytail like a ribbon. She is often seen wearing a black tank top with a yellow star print, an unzipped red jacket that ends just above the hips, a black belt, denim shorts and dark gray boots. She also has Lambda's identifying brand tattooed onto the left side of her chest. She is often seen wielding a Morning Star which is a Medieval, club-like weapon which is decorated with spikes.

Personality[]

Barbara is normally a rather impulsive girl with rough and aggressive ways of doing things and she is also outspoken. However, her psyche was severely damaged due to the experiments done on her at Lambda, which had a strong psychological impact. That is why she is somewhat angry when it comes to demons, but she rejoices when it comes to torturing them and eating their flesh, given her desire for revenge. Barbara also has a more tolerant side, which she usually shows in Norman's presence given her gratitude to him for saving her from Lambda.

Plot[]

Cuvitidala Arc[]

Minerva raided a factory farm

Barbara and her team followed their leader as they entered one of the Factory Farm's room.

On October 2047, Barbara walked along the corridor of a Factory Farm after she and her teammates exterminated the farm demons within, Barbara and her team soon entered the room where the cattle children were stored, she expressed her distaste towards the smell of the room. She later watched in disgust as her leader freed and hugged one of the cattle children. As Barbara and her team were unable to rescue the cattle children, they stepped out of the farm as they lit a fire to burn the entire factory farm to ashes. Sometime later, Barbara and her team watched the children from a balcony as Norman said how he will build them a "paradise".[4]

Barbara and Cislo confronted Emma and Ray

Barbara and Cislo confronted Emma and Ray.

When Emma and Ray entered Norman's office, they were instead greeted by Barbara, Cislo and Vincent. Barbara, being unfamiliar with the two, asked Vincent who they are. When she heard how Emma and Ray are one of the Grace Field escapees, she soon switched to a more friendly demeanor as she asked the two whether they want to taste the meat she was eating. Emma and Ray denied her offer, and revealed how they wished to look for their friend Norman. Barbara replied how the latter has gone to run an errand, as she and Cislo confronted Emma and Ray, interested to know more about them.[5]

Barbara and Cislo started to intimidate Emma and Ray (albeit in a comical manner), as they introduced themselves to the two. Since the two pairs are both escapees, Barbara and Cislo claimed how they are more superior and stronger than they are, since they had destroyed farms before. Ray purposely praised the two as Barbara and Cislo were soon flattered by his comments. Barbara and Cislo then proceeded to ask Emma and Ray to share with them more about their boss and their apparent idol, Norman.

Human World Arc[]

Barbara 2049

Barbara in 2049.

Upon arriving in the Human World, Barbara is seen to be visibly worried and shocked about Emma's disappearance. Barbara, along with the other children, agrees to search for Emma so they can reunite with her again.[6] Over the next two years spent in the Human World, Barbara began attending school. During spring 2049, she finally reunites with Emma again and cries tears of joy, even though she lost her memories.[7] Briefly in Chapter 181, Barbara can be seen with her hair tied back in a sports uniform. Although not confirmed, it would appear she became a star boxer. We can see this through her uniform, the presumable boxing gloves on her hands, and the camera flashes in the background.

Weapons and Abilities[]

Morning Star[]

Barbara's primary choice of weapon is a Morning Star, a Medieval, club-like weapon which is decorated with spikes.[4]

Strength[]

It is shown that Barbara is capable of nearly breaking a table out of anger. It is also hinted at or suggested that she almost destroyed other things in the hideout.[8]

Relationships[]

Norman[]

Just like Vincent, Ciclo, and Zazie, she love the boss very much and would follow the bosses every order.

Emma and Ray[]

At first when Barbara met Emma and Ray she didn't like them as she saw them as "Demon Sympathizers", she says that "All demons are the same." It becomes evident later though the Barbara comes to tolerate the pair as she works along side them to take down Grace Field, and later helps to find Emma

Cislo[]

Barbara and Cislo are close with each other as per they both are part of the Lambda Squad and came from the same plant at Goodwill Ridge. Barbara and Cislo both hate the demons with a burning passion and want to destroy them. They have a deep sympathy for each other and Cislo tends to keep Barbara from getting too upset.

Trivia[]

  • "Barbara" means "strange" or "foreign" in Greek, which matches the character since she and Cislo were curious when they first met Emma and Ray, who were foreign to them at first.
    • The same root word for Barbara is also where we get the term, "Barbarian", fitting with her mannerisms, destructive temper and her weapon of choice.
  • Barbara's favorite food is meat.[2]
  • The type of demon meat that Barbara eats apparently does not taste very good.[2]
  • She apparently does not really understand what Momotarō is.[9]
  • She thinks mice are gross.
  • According to the official fanbook, Cislo and Barbara were "randomly picked" to be sent to Lambda 7214.[2]
