Writer Shirai's personal highlights for The Promised Neverland fanatics:
To everyone who reads the chapter in Weekly Shonen Jump! Did any of you notice that Demizu Sensei secretly put HAPPY NEW YEAR in the chapter featured in issue 6?
If you only buy the graphic novels, it might be a little small, but see if you can spot in this version.
Writer Shirai's personal hihglights for The Promised Neverland fanatics, part 3:
1. A hint about the secret to the system(?) of the neck numbers is hidden somewhere in this volume.
2. Ray had decided at a young age to read all of the books in the house before he turned 12 years old. So the book he's holding in chapter 32 is the final one that he just finished reading.
When you overcome a hurdle, another bigger hurdle appears.
This year I learned to do a lot of things. Which means I have a lot of goals now. Will I be able to accomplish them? It's something to look forward to!
In volume 6, the secrets of this world will begin to be revealed. Please look forward to it!
Writer Shirai's personal highlights for The Promised Neverland fanatics, part 5:
1. Even the sticky notes are fun on the title page for chapter 45!
2. The straw hats in chapter 47! (There are other hats hidden within the chapter too. I think there are three more hidden hats, in various styles. The correct answer is…?)
3. There are clues to future plot points in the artwork! (Where? Some of it will be clear in the next volume.)
I'm so excited about the underground shelter! The water is good! The food is good! And the small space is also good! Being frugal with resources and using the garden to manage is very good!
But after a month—no, after even a week—anyone would probably start wanting sunlight.
I wonder how long the young children are going to spend underground.
Hoping they can run around in the green gardens again, they quietly wait for Emma and Ray to return. To be continued soon in volume 8.
When I was a kid, I went finishing in a small pond and I accidentally cut my hand with a lure. I remember thinking how much it must hurt for the fish who are caught.
The children of Goldy Pond know that someone will be sacrified every time. Do they wonder how much it will hurt for the one being sacrificed?
I'm sure they do.
Okay! The arc about the horrible village will continue in the next volume. Until then…try imaging how someone could survive in this village.
Writer Shirai's interesting tidbits for The Promised Neverland fanatics, part 3!
The maximum age for those who will leave the nest (be shipped out) differs depending on the farm. For Grace Field it's 12 years old. For Glory Bell it's 15 years old.
In this volume, there is a place where you can find out the Geezer's general age. Was it what you thought it was?
Please enjoy this volume! (By the way, did you notice the "umeboshi in the shelter" in volume 7?)
Wow, an anime version was announced! I can't wait for 2019!
By the way, when are you reading this book?
Of course there are those who are reading this right when it comes out, but perhaps there are those reading this after the anime has started airing. Are there people reading after the anime has finished? If you're from the future, let me know what you think!
By the way, 2019 is when Krone was born. I'm looking forward to reaching all the characters' birthdays slowly as we progress into the future.
Shonen Jump graphic novels are usually 200 pages per volume, so if we're at volume 10, that would mean I've drawn about 2,000 pages. I'm going to catch up to the A.D. years! The lower half of my closet is a sea of manga paper.
By the way, I'm currently drawing the pages for volume 11, and Emma is…um, wow, what's going to happen to Emma?!
The outcome of the battle will be in the next volume!
From the seashore of manga paper, thank you for always supporting me!
Writer Shirai's personal highlights for The Promised Neverland fanatics, part 7!
1. I know it's sudden, but I'm revealing their blood types! Ray: AB Norman: B Emma: O Isabella: A
2. The design of Leuvis! The motif for his mask was a crayfish. His overall motif was a fake Minerva. (When I heard that, I was like, Demizu Sensei, you're super amazing!!!! It's like this every week. Sheer happiness.)
It looks like the kids can't let their guards down, but now with more friends, they can begin planning the rescue of Phil and the others.
This volume ended at chapter 97, so in volume 12 we'll reach 100 chapters!
We've actually already reached it in the pages of Shounen Jump, and chapter 100 being that specific story is all due to Shirai Sensei's calculation. See you again!
The vampiric plant Vida was featured beautifully in the anime.
Vida is a fictitious flower, but...
"The way the small flowers come together to bloom symbolizes families and unity." These were the words for the flower Verbena, and I really liked them. So I used them as reference for the design of Vida.
Spring is just about starting. For those of you who are interested, you can try growing some Verbena.
Please look forward to the next volume! I'm so inspired by the exciting plot developments that I've already thought of what to do for the next cover!
Ever since the bookplates in the library showed up, I've had many people ask me, "What kind of person is Mr. Minerva?" And every time I evaded the question, I was looking forward to this day.
Isn't it nice to have something to look forward to?!
What I'm currently looking forward to is the second season of the anime in 2020! And what I'm going to eat tomorrow.
Writer Shirai's personal highlights for The Promised Neverland fanatics, part 10!
1. Chris's name (Kurisu) and the Japanese word for medicine (kusuri) being similar was a coincidence. (I realized it later.)
2. Zazie is actually five years old.
3. Highlight #3 in volume 13 might make more sense after you read chapter 120 in this volume.
About the splash page for chapter 118... The remaining pages in their scripts represent their remaining life spans. Only Ray is holding two, but it's not clear which one is the script. Isn't that crazy? I love it!!
How is volume 16? Ayshe, who appears in this volume, is someone I've been looking forward to revealing.
And finally, the Japanese live-action movie was announced! I just received the production materials, and wow! The demons are super real!
They've already built the 3D models, and even at this point the texture of the skin is creepy and amazing, but after some discussion they're going to polish the shapes and textures further.
They also asked about the food the demons eat. I wonder how it's going to turn out?!
It's Volume 17! I hope you enjoy the battle between Norman and the queen.
By the way... The queen's hair and other things require applying different screen tones in various places. This intensely tedious job is done by a staffer named Z-san. I met Z-san on Pixiv, and we've been friends for over five years despite never meeting dace-to-face. You never know where you can make friends. Whether it's online or in real life, I've realized it's important to treasure your relationships. Now, the relationship between Norman Emma is getting worrisome, and that's where the story will go next!
Volume 18 is scheduled to be released in English in January 2021! Please look forward to it!
I hope you enjoyed volume 18. For this volume cover, I have the Japanese logo placed vertically for the first time. It was a challenge I'd never attempted before! I have various challenges for the next volume and the ones after that too.
Please Looking forward to the future The Promised Neverland volumes! By the way, people who are reading this, are you reading it in a physical book? Or in the digital version? Recently I bought the entire series of One Piece for my kindle. I can read it anytime on my phone, and it's very convenient. Physical books are good, and so are the digital versions. I often can't choose... you buy both! That's what being an adult is all about!
The release date of this volume was delayed a month in Japan, so I would like to thank everyone who waited patiently.
At the beginning of the story, Isabella was 31 years old, and now she's 33. Unlike Emma and the other kids, her physique hasn't changed much. But her position has gone up and her likfe has changed, so I tried to draw her with more authority and beauty.
I was drawing the prototype storyboards of The Promised Neverland that I would later submit to the Shonen Jump editorial department.
I was confident about my idea. But there were many elements of the story that didn't have the standard Jump traits. It had a female protagonist, and was plot driven instead of character driven.
Even as I look back on it now, I strongly believe that depending on the editor, my submission could have been rejected on the spot.
But editor Sugita-san read these unconventional storyboards and said, "This is intresting!" Without hesitation, he gave me the chance. And then it helped me turn these poorly drawn storyboards into a series by brainstorming with me and guiding me. Even during the serialzation, every single week, he never compromised in the search for a fun, concise and high-quality story. And even though he didn't have much time, he stuck with me until I was satisfied. I cannot put into words how much he's helped me from the day we met until now.
And Demizu sensei. She jumped into this project with everything, willingly and fearlessly, even though I was a nobody who had never even won an award.
We had difficulty finding the artist, and at one point I had thought this project was done. But then Demizu sensei appeared before me like a god.
She overcame every difficult challenge with her amazing drawing skills.
I don't know how many timesshe saved me, helped me and gave me exciting moments.
What if I had called a minute later to bring in the storyboards?
What if I hadn't waited for the day to submit them and had given up instead?
And what if I han't met Sugita-san or Demizu sensei?
I and The Promised Neverland might not be here in front of you today.
To Sugita-san and Demizu sensei, who fought alongside me...
To my dear friend who first who first read the prototype storyboards and encouraged me with the words, "It's good, so why don't you just submit the storyboards?"
To the readers who supported me through the serialization and graphic novels...
To Demizu sensei'sstaff, everyone in the Jump editorial department...
To designer Ishino-san, volume editor Takeuchi-san...
I was able to runthis marathon because of you and everyone else who was involved with The Promised Neverland.
Thank you so much!! I appreciate everything you did from the bottom of my heart!!
By the way, those bottles in the final chapter were the credits. (Laughs)
Shirai sensei, thank you much for guiding me this far. You are the best writer in the world. And to our editor, Sugita-san from the Jump editorial department, we were able to achive so much with The Promised Neverland because of you. I cannout express my apperciation to you enough. Thank you, and I hope we can keep working together.
The many pictures drawn are probably pictures posted somewhere. Have you ever had a photo posted inside a house? Maybe it's a window through which Emma and the three of us can see a new world. After looking at the pictures, please give the manga another look.
After reading the four stories in order from the beginning, with excitement and grin, I arrived at the last four paragraphs. The destructive power is amazing!! (I like it.) I cried.
I'm so happy that you wrote such a wonderful novel.
I've been looking forward to the second part of the short version ever since the project was announced. For the cover illustration, my goal was to depict the strength and beauty of Isabella and Krone.
If you don't mind, please compare it with last time. They are dignified adults, but they may never come out of the picture frame.
Part 2 of the short version! This time there are two stories: Mom's story and Sister's story.
Both stories are filled with wonderful lines and wonderful scenes. Demizu's favorite scene is the girl's talk scene between Cecile and Krone. Really like, this time.
(Once again, Nanao-sensei's destructive power is amazing.)
Ladies and gentlemen, what is your favorite place?
The third novel is now on sale! This time's cover illustration has more characters than before, so I think we were able to create a composition that goes well with Goldy Pond's colorful buildings.
It's been a while since I was able to draw Yugo and Lucas. I feel like I haven't seen you for a while, so I'm happy. Even after the series ended, please enjoy the story of Neva World!
When I read "Two Wills", one of the three stories in this novel, I was extremely disappointed. I thought, "Goldy Pond, what a terrible place I have created!" (Sorry Gillian...!!)
I'm really grateful to Nanao for bringing out the drama and emotions that were born to the fullest. Part 3, in this volume as well, the destructive power of Nanao Sensei is amazing! Stories of lives that were certainly lived in different places over a long period of time.
Precious memories packed into a treasure box. Whether you're watching it for the first time or it's been a long time, please come and enjoy these memorable films one by one, one episode at a time, one at a time. Please enjoy the view. The destructive power of the newly written parts is also amazing...!
However, they are still in the prime of their growth period, and I'm sure they will grow even more in the future.
Even though I feel a little lonely every day after the manga series ended, it's great to have Nanao-sensei's novels!
I totally destroyed The Promised Neverland's first class thrill by turning it into this gag manga. I don't care if this is not the usual Emma and others. Please tell that to yourself while reading.
Publishing a The Promised Neverland art collection has been a dream of mine ever since the Escape Arc. Now that dream has come true, with so many wonderful illustrations from Demizu Sensei. Her illustrations are so gorgeous that I always thought they should be collected-and now that day has come!
This book will be of intrest to deticated fans as well as casual viewers. It contains Demizu Sensei's beautiful artwork, some slightly rare bonus illustrations, specially drawn illustrations just for this art book and unreleased roughs. Best of all are the sides of each illustration. Be sure to keep an eye on them-top and bottom, left and right. There, fans can see parts that would normally get cut off due to the printing process for the magazines and graphic novels. Keep that in mind especially for pages 42 and 43...
However, Kaiu Shirai's brain is exposed to the maximum ever, full of behind-the-scenes stories, and we have included as much undisclosed information about the characters and stories as possible.
It features four stories, three of them stand-alone stories released after The Promised Neverland. But all four of them were storyboarded before The Promised Neverland in order to get The Promised Neverland released into the world. (I actually wrote a bunch of stuff.)
That is why they have elements and a feel that is reminiscent of TPN.
These four stories could be called "the road to TPN."
It would be great if you could enjoy them, whether you're a fan of TPN or you're completely new to our work.
It's been five and a half years since "Poppy's Wish." I'm full of emotion. And they created the best Japanese title logo for us again! It looks like a theme park at first glance, and that gets me excited.
Characters from all the stories appear on the cover, but TPN takes up such a big space in my heart. So Emma is drawn bigger. Please forgive me for that. Even my drawing speed was faster for TPN characters.
I was looking at an image of a toaster while I was drawing Poppy and got hungry. So when I finish my work today, I'm going to eat a pizza toast.
Well then, I'm looking forward to the next time I see everyone.
But due to the new virus variant, many people couldn't come due to travel restrictions between prefectures, parents refusing to let them go, or restrictions for those working in the health and elderly care industries. I was told that even if they wanted to go, some people had to give up on it.
We were already planning on including this manga somewhere, but we decided to hasten publication and put it at the end of this book.
It's only one part of what was a huge exhibit, but I would be happy if you enjoyed it.
This collaboration was so unexpected and so humbling that I was able to draw a Chanel comic for Jump! When I drew it while holding the No. I felt like Chanel, which I had always thought of as a brand, suddenly became a familiar presence. I would be happy if readers could feel the same way through the manga!
Isn't Coco Chanel the founder of CHANEL? Coco is a nickname, but her real name is Gabrielle. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even know about it at first. Gabrielle's way of life, style and philosophy of elegance. Inspired by this, I wrote three stories set in modern Japan.
