Anna (アンナ, An'na?) is a nine-year-old orphan who formerly resided at Grace Field House Plant 3 as one of the many foster children of Isabella. Due to her age, Anna is considered to be one of the house's "good quality goods".[5] She is a quiet but thoughtful and strong-willed girl who is brought into the escape plan alongside Nat, Thoma and Lannion after the truth of the orphanage is revealed.

After successfully escaping Grace Field alongside fourteen other orphans, Anna now seeks to find William Minerva, whom she and her family believe can grant them the liberty to live a safe and peaceful life away from the demons.

Appearance

Anna is a young girl with fair skin, light blue eyes and a rather petite build. She has long, straight blonde hair tied into twin braids, laid on her shoulders. She later cut her hair to about shoulder-length to save Ray, after which she began tying her hair in two short pigtails at the back. She wears the standard Grace Field uniform- a plain white long sleeved button-up shirt and a white skirt along with brown boots. She has her identification number, "48194", tattooed on the left side of her neck.

In 2047, Anna stopped wearing the standard Grace Field uniform, instead adopting a long black skirt and a long sleeved white shirt with the same brown boots she wore at Grace Field House. Now at the age of eleven, Anna has grown taller and her hair has grown back to the length it used to be, but this time she sports a straight version of her hair while wearing two braids on both sides on her head. It is also shown that when she joined Ray and Emma, among others, on a mission to get the medicine for Chris, she started to wear her hair in a ponytail.

History

Anna was born at Grace Field on April 25, 2036 and sent to Plantation 3 a year later in 2037, growing up along with several other children under the parental care of Isabella.

Personality

Anna is shown to be a bright, gentle, and kind girl who loves her siblings dearly. She is very protective of them, cares for them deeply and would go great lengths to keep them safe. She likes to spend time gardening, reading, sewing and helping out with the babies. Like the rest of her siblings, she enjoys playing games such as tag and hide-and-seek. Anna also has an eye for fashion and beauty and, along with Gilda, dreams of being able to wear all kinds of different clothes. She is one of the children considered trustworthy by Emma, and her willingness to help despite the danger demonstrates her loyalty and bravery. Anna is more than willing to make sacrifices for the sake of her family, as seen when she cuts her hair off for Ray.

Anna gradually becomes more of a motherly figure for the rest of the group alongside Gilda. She can often be seen taking care of the other children with a smile on her face, or shielding them with her body when confronted with danger. Due to this, she was initially called "Babysitter" by Yugo.

Anna is also highly empathetic as well. She makes an active effort to be kind to Ray after the events of the escape, consistently reminding him of the concern she feels for him and of the trust the other children have in him. She can be seen comforting Emma after the escape from Shelter B06-32, and giving medical aid to strangers such as Hayato and Jin.

Despite her gentle and demure exterior, Anna can also be hardy and stubborn in certain situations. She is able to plan rationally when convincing Emma that it was the right choice for her to come on the factory raid. She was also very determined to join the mission to the plantation despite having very little experience in combat, showing how much she loves her siblings. Though Anna is often level-headed and calm, she is shown to let her fears about Ray's safety impact her focus on the mission. She is able to forget her worries, however, and proceed as planned. However, after Emma is nearly killed by demons, Anna can not help but allow her emotions to overpower her as she hugs Emma and cries in relief.

Plot

Introduction Arc

Anna was first seen studying alongside Ray in the library of the Grace Field House. A few days later, during a game of tag, she was caught by Krone along with Nat and Thoma.

Jailbreak Arc

It is revealed that Anna, along with Nat, Thoma, and Lannion, was brought into the escape plan after Don and Gilda trusted them enough to listen in on a conversation with Krone, revealing the truth about Grace Field to them. After this, the number of children aware of the secret by that point was increased to nine, including Anna and the three oldest children Ray, Emma, and Norman. However, over the course of the next couple weeks, Anna, Nat, Thoma, and Lannion all kept a low profile in order to ensure neither Krone or Isabella could figure out their awareness of the secret as well. During the two months after Norman's shipment, Anna and her allies got instructions from Emma on how to train the other orphans for the upcoming escape. in particular, Anna and the other children who knew of the secret managed to convince seven other younger children including Dominic, Mark, Chris, Rossi, Yvette, Alicia, and Jemima to join in on the escape plan.

In January 2046, Anna assisted with the escape by cutting her braids off for Emma's plan to outwit Isabella by using them as part of a decoy body for Ray. Anna, along side Jemima, also took responsibility in sewing the ropes used in the zip-lining phase of the escape. Once Emma started the fire, Anna and the others put on their running shoes, grabbed the supplies they gathered and stashed in the forest, disabled the tracking devices in their ears with Ray's hand-made device, and ran to the wall once Emma caught up with them. Anna also assisted in bandaging Emma and Ray's ears after they were forced to cut them off in order to dispose of their tracking devices in a fast manner. Anna and her siblings then escape from Grace Field by zip-lining down into the forest on the other side of the large cliff, where they flee as fast as they can until they reach another cliff and witness the sunrise for their first day as free children.

Promised Forest Arc

Search For Minerva Arc

Anna was seen among the children searching for a way out of the demon forest. She reached just like the rest of the children Shelter B06-32 and took refuge in it for more than a year. There, she met Mister with whom she developed a deep bond over time.

Cuvitidala Arc

Anna was shocked like the rest of the children when Andrew and his group attacked the shelter. She was brought to safety with the rest of the children and managed to escape with them.

Once outside, the group again sought shelter in an underground cave in a with wild-demons infected forest, where she took care of the injured Chris together with Gilda and Zack. Anna was later seen when Andrew attacked the group again, killing four children and seriously injuring Dominic in the progress. It was not clear how Anna reacted when Andrew was killed by a man-eater but it is implied that she was relieved.[6]

King of Paradise Arc

After Andrew's attack, Anna heard from Emma and Ray that Mister and Lucas had been killed during the explosion of the shelter. Gillian broke into tears and this triggered the rest of the children, including Anna to cry as well due to the loss of their fallen friends. After that, the children decided to leave the hideout and go to the location William Minerva told them to go to. Anna and the other children began traveling towards the jaw of the lion and while traveling they spotted 2 boys shortly after, fighting with wild man-eaters.[7] Emma decided to save them and the pair introduced themselves as Jin and Hayato, members of William Minerva's group.[8]

After a while, Chris' situation worsened drastically, so much so that he would not make the next day This made Jin and Hayato decide to propose to steal medicines from a farm. Emma agreed and Anna said that it was indeed the only option. Then Hayato proposed to go with Emma and someone else. At first, Zack was chosen because of his power and skills but Anna then asked Emma if she could join them instead, this request shocked and surprised Ray, Thoma, and Lannion. Anna said that the group needs strong people like Zack and Sandy to survive in case demons or people from the Ratri Clan attack again. Zack and Sandy agreed to the plan and also said that Anna had done everything she could in the past year together with Lucas to become better in the field of medication and medical care. These compliments made Anna blush and then Ray joined the group. Anna tied her hair in a ponytail and then left with the group towards the farm.[9]

The children slowly crept in through the underground sewer of the farm, while climbing in the pipes, Ray helped Anna not to fall. After a while, the children arrived in the complex but not without danger. A patrolling demon saw Anna walking around and prepared his attack only to be killed by Ray instead. The other demons also spotted the rest of the children and, to make matters worse, Ray was also split up from the rest of the group, after which Hayato decided to help him. Meanwhile, Anna and Emma proceeded their way toward the medicine room.[10]

Anna was later seen with the rest of the children listening to Emma's and Ray's speech about leaving The Paradise Hideout to go to the seven walls to try to make a better promise. Anna was reluctant and surprised at first but after hearing Emma out she agreed on her plan. She then waved Emma goodbye like the rest of the children.[11]

Human World Arc

The GF and GP children at school

Anna and the others attending school.

Upon arriving in the Human World, Anna is seen to be visibly worried and shocked about Emma's disappearance. Anna, along with the other children, agrees to search for Emma so they can reunite with her again.[12] Over the next two years spent in the Human World, Anna began attending school and studying intensively, presumably within medicine. During spring 2049, she finally reunites with Emma again and cries tears of joy, even though she lost her memories.[13] In the special epilogue chapter, Dreams Come True, Anna lived out her dream of wearing all kinds of different clothes.[14]

Skills and Abilities

Medical Proficiency

Anna reading with Lucas

Anna studying medicine with Lucas.

Anna is reliable when it comes to medical treatment for the other kids, so much so she is even more skilled than some of the older children from Goldy Pond. After seeing the injuries several of her family members endured, Anna decided to study the field of medicine for the sake of her siblings. Over the span of one year studying medicines alongside Lucas, Anna developed knowledge of both medicine and medicinal drugs as well as the preparations of most remedies and ointments. She is also capable of administering surgery with the help of others, as seen when Emma was gravely injured during her fight with Leuvis.

Adaptive

During her time at Grace Field, Anna was considered to be high quality due to her age and testing score. Anna is further shown to be able to quickly adapt to new situations and information, as demonstrated by how rapidly she mastered the medical knowledge in the books given to her by Lucas. In addition to that, Anna also developed knowledge of plant cultivation in order to grow crops in the Shelter B06-32 fields.

Relationships

Nat

Due to being the same age and having grown up together, Nat and Anna are very good friends and are almost always seen together. Anna cares for Nat just like how she cares for everyone who crosses her path. Alongside Nigel, Thoma, Lannion and a few others, Nat appeared to be one of the few people who have at least a slight interest, on Anna. This was shown when Nat stared at her when she was preparing to enter a demon territory with Emma, Ray and Hayato, with a heart shape beside him as the girl tied her hair, though Nat immediately denied Hayato when he said how he and the others liked her.[15]

Emma

Anna loves Emma like a sister and worries about her well-being when Emma puts herself in danger. Emma considers Anna trustworthy enough to allow her to listen in on the conversation she and Norman have with Krone, thus revealing the truth about their situation at Grace Field. Emma's faith in Anna proved to be valuable - as Anna was able to help with preparations leading up to the escape. During the two months that Emma was feigning defeat, Anna, along with several other children, secretly took orders from her and trained their siblings while slowly inducting them into the plan.

Anna is shown to be concerned with Emma and Ray, who were often undertaking the most dangerous missions and leaving the group. When Anna announced to the group that she would volunteer to go on the mission to raid the factory farm for medicine. Emma is initially shocked by this, and questions Anna's decision briefly before Anna explains how Emma's bravery and love for her family inspired her, and that she wanted to be more like her. Emma is happy to have her on the team after listening to the other children's praise of her medical knowledge.[16]

Anna hugs Emma

A worried Anna hugs Emma.

Later, after being separated from Ray and Hayato, Emma trusts Anna's expertise regarding the type of medicine they need for Chris. Emma senses Anna's worry for Ray and comforts Anna by reassuring her that he will survive and return to them. Anna is successfully consoled and focuses on the task at hand, only for Emma to be grabbed by a demon shortly after as they try to escape. After Emma is saved by Zazie, both Anna and Ray run to check on her. Anna hugs Emma and loudly exclaims how worried she was.[17]

Ray

Anna cares for Ray deeply. While their initial interactions are somewhat scarce due to Ray's quiet and independent nature. Like all the other children, Ray considered Anna a potential burden to the escape plan and urged Emma and Norman to reconsider their stance on trying to escape with all the children at the house. Unbeknownst to Ray, however, Anna was already informed of the secret and contributing to the escape efforts. During this time, Emma also made Anna aware of Ray's plan to kill himself the morning of his birthday . Anna cut off her braids to help create a convincing decoy for Isabella, so that Ray's suicide attempt could be avoided and he could escape along with them. Ray seems shocked to see Emma presenting Anna's braids, as her long hair was her most identifiable feature. This is a sign of sacrifice in Japan.

Shortly after escaping beyond the wall, Ray approaches Anna and apologizes for what happened to her hair. Anna surprises him by dismissing any need for him to apologize, and instead wishes him a happy birthday.[18] Later on, Ray thanks Anna for her efforts during the preparations.[19]

Ray anna support

Ray catches Anna.

Ray appears visibly shocked when Anna announces her intent to participate in raiding a Factory Farms. His worry is later commented on by Oliver, who suggests that Ray should join the group. Ray joined them and spent their trip bringing up the rear. While crawling through a sewer pipe at the factory farm, Anna stumbled but Ray managed to catch her from falling. Later, when Anna is discovered by a patrolling demon, Ray saved her by pushing her out of the way and killed the demon.

In the ensuing chaos, Anna and Emma are separated from Ray as they hunt for the medicine while he distracts the guards with Hayato. Anna is worried about Ray, causing Emma to reassure her that Ray will be alright. At the end, all three are reunited at the end of their mission - with both Anna and Ray approaching Emma with relief after she was nearly eaten by demons.[20]

Norman

Anna and Norman did not interact that much when they lived in the Grace Field House. Norman agreed with Emma's plan to bring Anna, along with the others, into the plan without Ray's knowledge. Anna was saddened to see Norman leaving to join his new "foster parents" later on.

They were reunited two years later in the Paradise Hideout where Anna broke down in tears after seeing him alive after all those years.

Lucas

Anna and Lucas shared a great bond. This was demonstrated when Sandy told the group that Anna learned everything about medicines and health care from Lucas over the past year. After Lucas' death, Anna was seen crying and grieving like the rest of the children.

Zack and Sandy

Anna is friends with Zack and Sandy. She shares a mutual respect with them and the two of them gave her multiple compliments on her skills and achievements over the past year. This resulted in Anna blushing because of their remarks.

Nigel, Thoma and Lannion

Anna has been an older sisterly figure for Thoma and Lannion throughout their lives in Grace Field House. Anna cares for the two just like how she cares for everyone who crosses her path. Meanwhile, Anna is a close ally of Nigel's over the years when living in Shelter B06-32.

Nigel, Thoma and Lannion, along with Nat and a few other boys appeared to have a crush, or at least a slight interest, on Anna. This was shown when they stared at her intently when she was preparing to enter a demon territory with Emma, Ray and Hayato. Each of them giving Anna their blessings as the girl tied her hair back into a ponytail. Hayato later interjected their thoughts and claimed that they liked her, they all comically denied his claim.[21]

Jemima

Anna has been an older sisterly figure for Jemima throughout their lives in Grace Field House. Anna cares for the her just like how she cares for everyone who crosses her path. However, Jemima is especially close to Anna and is often seen hugging Anna or playing with her. Both of them have an eye for beauty and share an interest in gardening, sewing and fashion. After escaping from Grace Field, Anna and Jemima are often seen helping each other with chores and teaching each other about various things.
