The Ancestors were a group of humans who lived 1,000 years ago. They are the ancestors of the cattle children and the Ratri family, who were responsible for forging the Promise with Him in order to end a long war between humans and Demons.
History[]
Nearly a thousand years ago, the human leaders of an six unknown countries were caught up in a war between the humans and demons. At some point, the six human leaders met each other on the battlefield, and they all became trusted companions, putting aside nations and races to fight together. One night after a whole day of fighting with countless causalities, the six leaders discussed about how to end the war. Julius Ratri, the leader, suddenly proposed to the idea about offering up a portion of humans to the demons in exchange for letting other humans live, but the other five leaders were against this, deeming that it was possible to end the war without any human getting eaten.[1]
A few days later, Julius once again brought up his previous proposal and wanted his allies to reconsider it, sick and tired of continuously having to sacrifice people. His allies refused once again; not only to save innocent humans, but because they didn't want Julius to suffer on his own and carry all of his burdens by himself. Julius, however, was dissatisfied by their answers, and brought several demons to their hideouts, revealing that he had already made a deal with . He betrayed his allies to achieve peace between the worlds, in which Julius' allies were offered to the demons as the first generation of cattle.[2]

Trivia[]
- In the initial concept, there was an idea of a journey in search for the biological parents of Emma and others.[3]
- According to the official fanbook, The Ratri family was rather close to Emma's (and others') ancestors. The ancestors were designed with a rebirth-like theme. Although the blood thinned a lot in 1000 years, somehow a remnant was visible. When compared with the Grace Field children, one can understand who was blood-related to whom.[3]
- Before starting the serialization, Shirai once wondered which one between Ray and Norman would be a girl if he had to make Emma a boy (to meet the editorial dept.'s requests). He decided Norman might be the girl in such case. Shirai thinks maybe Norman would've looked like the white-haired ancestor lady if he were a girl.[3]
- When asked about the names, origin, status, etc of Julius’ friends. Shirai responded, "Honestly, I think it's best to see them from a wide and larger perspective as the demon exterminating avengers instead of people from specific countries or locations. So I wouldn't dare to reveal their nationalities or names. I'm sorry."[3]
